Area Guide to Lombok Bali

THIS IS LOMBOK

Lombok sits just across the strait from Bali — a short flight or fast boat away — and the difference hits you immediately. The beaches are more pristine, the crowds are thinner, and the whole island moves at a genuinely unhurried pace. The gateway to the Gili Islands, and only just starting out on the international hotel scene. This island has so much to discover.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Lombok doesn’t yet have the family infrastructure of South Bali — the restaurant scene is thinner, activity options are fewer, and distances between things are longer. Your hotel carries more of the weight here, especially with young children. Worth knowing before you plan: Lombok has two distinct areas for families. Fly in, and you’ll naturally base yourself around Kuta Lombok in the south, where Novotel and Pullman sit on a sheltered, swimmable bay. Arrive by fast boat from Bali, and you’ll come in near the Gili Islands in the north, where The Lombok Lodge and The Oberoi sit on Medana Bay. Both are excellent — the right one depends on how you arrive.

Overall:

Lombok rewards families who’ve done Bali before and want something quieter and more pristine — come with the right expectations and the extraordinary hotels here will do the rest.
