Villa or hotel? A hotel and a villa are two great but very different Bali holiday experiences, and many families don’t choose between them. They do both.
Across a week or two in Bali, dividing your stay between a hotel and a villa gives your family the ideal mix of energy: social, easy resort days, and slower, private villa time where you set the pace.
Why split your stay between a villa and a hotel?
What a family hotel does best
Hotels are great for kids. They get to play with other families on holiday and make the most of the kids’ club, while parents people-watch by the pool, order from the poolside menu and slip away to the on-site spa.
Hotels also give older kids a bit of freedom. They can roam the grounds, head to the pool or grab a snack on their own while you relax, all within the safe bubble of the resort.

What a private villa does best
Villas come into their own when two or more families, or three generations, are holidaying together and happy to make their own fun. You get privacy, plus the freedom to choose when to rest, eat and play, without working around anyone else’s timetable.
A villa holiday is generally a more independent experience. Rather than relying on a hotel’s concierge or activity program, you choose your own adventure each day.

The best of both
Put them together and everyone wins. Kids get the kids’ club, the new friends and the waterslides. Adults get the spa, the poolside menus, and then quiet evenings by their own private pool. It’s two holidays in one trip, and often two different corners of Bali too.
Hotel first or villa first?
There’s no wrong answer, but here’s what we usually suggest.
Start at the hotel
Starting at a family hotel is the easiest way to arrive in Bali with kids. Nusa Dua and Sanur are both close to the airport, so you’re by the pool quickly. The kids’ club keeps everyone busy while you shake off the flight, and you can ease into Bali without having to plan anything.
After a few days, when everyone’s settled, move to your villa for the slower, more private part of the trip.
Finish at the hotel
Some families prefer the opposite: villa first, then a hotel to finish. It works especially well if your flight home is late. A hotel close to the airport means a short transfer on the last day, and resort facilities keep the kids happy while you pack.
Our rule of thumb
If you’re travelling with little ones or arriving on a long-haul flight, start at the hotel. If your return flight leaves late at night, finish at one.
How many nights in each?
For most families, three to four nights at a hotel is the sweet spot. That’s long enough to enjoy the kids’ club and facilities, and short enough to keep it feeling like a treat. Spend the rest of the holiday at your villa.
On a longer trip of two weeks or more, some families split it three ways: a hotel to arrive, a villa in the middle, and another hotel or villa in a different area to finish.
Our favourite villa and hotel combinations in Bali
The best split stays combine two different areas, so your family sees two sides of Bali in one trip. These are the combinations we recommend most.
A villa in Canggu, then a hotel in Ubud
Start with a private villa in Canggu, with cool cafés, surf breaks, rice-field views and a creative, laid-back energy, where you set your own pace each day. Then head inland to a family hotel in Ubud for jungle views, temples and Balinese culture, with the resort taking care of everything.
It’s a brilliant contrast: coastal and independent first, then lush, cultural and pampered. Padma Resort Ubud is a great pick for the hotel part, with its guaranteed connecting Family Premier Room and its Family Suite with a private balcony hot tub.

A hotel in Uluwatu, then a villa in Sanur
Begin on the clifftops of Uluwatu, with ocean views, dramatic coastline and some of Bali’s most jaw-dropping family resorts. Then cross the island to a villa in Sanur, where the calm beach, traffic-free beach path and local cafés make it easy to slow right down.
Uluwatu gives you the wow factor. Sanur gives you the village feel and the freedom to explore on foot or by bike. For the hotel part, Renaissance Bali Uluwatu‘s Family Loft Suite and the private pool villas at Family Nest Resort & Villas are both excellent family choices.

A hotel in Nusa Dua, then a villa wherever you like
Nusa Dua is Bali’s resort land, so it’s the natural place for the hotel part of your trip. Settle in with the kids’ club, lagoon pools and manicured gardens, and let the resort do the work. Resorts like Paradisus by Meliá Bali and Conrad Bali make arrival days easy.
From there, choose your villa location to suit your family. Head to Ubud for culture and jungle, Canggu or Seminyak for cafés and beach clubs, or Sanur for an easy, local-feeling beach village. Nusa Dua is close to the airport, so it also works well at the end of your trip.

Tips for a smooth villa and hotel split stay
Plan your transfer day. Hotel check-out is usually late morning, and villa check-in is often mid-afternoon. Plan a lunch stop or a family activity on the way so you’re not waiting around with tired kids.
Pack a transfer bag. Put swimmers, snacks and a change of clothes in one easy bag, so you can jump straight into the pool when you arrive rather than digging through suitcases.
Book the villa early. The best family villas, especially large ones with four or more bedrooms, book out well ahead in the school holidays.
Match the setup to the stay. Choose your hotel for its facilities and kids’ club. Choose your villa for its space, bedroom setup and pool safety.
Villa and hotel split stays: common questions
Is it worth splitting a Bali holiday between a villa and a hotel?
For most families, yes. Across a week or two, you get the kids’ club, social atmosphere and facilities of a hotel, plus the privacy and independence of a villa, and often two different areas of Bali in one trip.
Is a villa or a hotel better for families in Bali?
It depends on your group. Hotels are great for kids who love a kids’ club and making friends, and for parents who want the spa and poolside menus. Villas suit two or more families, or three generations, travelling together and happy to make their own fun. Many families simply do both.
What’s the best area combination for a Bali split stay?
Our favourites are a villa in Canggu with a hotel in Ubud, or a hotel in Uluwatu followed by a villa in Sanur. You can also start with a resort stay in Nusa Dua and choose your villa location from there.
How do we get between the hotel and the villa?
A private driver is the easiest option for families, with room for luggage, car seats and a stop along the way. Your villa or hotel can usually help arrange a transfer.
