Lombok sits just across the strait from Bali — a short flight or fast boat away — and the difference hits you immediately. The beaches are more pristine, the crowds are thinner, and the whole island moves at a pace that feels genuinely unhurried. If Bali has become a little too familiar, Lombok is the answer.

But let’s be honest about what you’re trading. Lombok doesn’t yet have the family infrastructure of south Bali. The restaurant scene is thinner, activity options are fewer, and the distances between things are longer. The hotels carry more of the weight here — you’re more reliant on your resort to keep everyone happy, especially with young children. It rewards families who are confident travellers and who genuinely want to switch off.

The right one depends on how you arrive.
