Capella Ubud is genuinely unlike anything else in our collection. Designed by architect Bill Bensley as a tribute to the spirit of early European explorers, it’s a tented camp in the rainforest — 22 individually themed one-bedroom tents and one two-bedroom lodge, each with a private saltwater pool, set on sloping terrain among the trees above the sacred Wos River.
No TVs in the rooms (available on request with headsets for the comfort of other guests). Canvas walls mean you hear the forest from dusk to dawn. It’s extraordinary. For families: Capella is recommended for children aged 6 and up. The hotel notes that the sloping terrain and canvas tent structure make it unsuitable for very young children. The two-bedroom Lodge is the family configuration— sleeping 2 adults and up to 3 children, with a private heated pool and open-air living area. Camp Rangers lead curated children’s adventures across the grounds. A Wayang Kulit shadow puppet performance under the stars is among the cultural experiences tailored for families.
Children 12 and above are charged as adults. It’s worth being direct about what this property is and isn’t. Capella Ubud is not a traditional resort — there’s no kids’ club with arts and crafts and a splash pool. It’s an immersive jungle experience for families who want something genuinely extraordinary and are happy for children to engage with the natural environment, cultural programming, and camp-style adventure. Families who need full resort infrastructure should choose the Four Seasons Sayan or Padma Ubud instead. Families with older children or teens who appreciate the unusual will find Capella Ubud one of the most memorable stays of their lives.
