Our Take

The Ungasan Clifftop Resort is an iconic property. Seven private five-bedroom villas each — plus a collection of one-bedroom suites — are perched 150 meters above the Indian Ocean on Bali’s southern tip. The view on arrival is what makes every guest remember it: the limestone cliff, the Indian Ocean below, the unbroken horizon. Guests describe the sensation of driving through the gates as entering a resort of fantasy.

Butler service throughout, complimentary breakfast delivered to the villa or taken at Waatu restaurant, and priority access to Sundays Beach Club below via the resort’s private inclinator. Sundays Beach Club is the feature that most defines the family experience here. Complimentary access and priority reserved daybeds for Ungasan guests. Lifeguards on duty. Complimentary snorkeling gear, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks. Daily live music, sunset bonfires, and a menu curated by an award-winning Chef.

It transforms what would otherwise be a purely clifftop retreat into one of the most complete family beach days available anywhere in Uluwatu. At high tide the beach narrows, at low tide the reef emerges, and the snorkeling is extraordinary. There is no formal kids club at The Ungasan — worth knowing plainly before booking. Babysitting is available. The villas themselves are the experience: Villa Ambar has a large media and family room that functions as an exceptional indoor play space, interconnecting bedrooms, pool fence availability and a spacious lawn. The five-bedroom format means that multiple families or extended family groups have genuine space to be together without being on top of each other. Extra beds and cots are available.

Butler service anticipates the needs of families who communicate what they require. The Ungasan suits families with older children who want something genuinely extraordinary rather than a conventional resort experience. It is not a high-energy environment with organised daily activities — it is a privacy-first clifftop villa experience with the bonus of Sundays Beach Club and the service to smooth over everything else. For the right family at the right price point, it has very few equals on the Bukit Peninsula.

About Uluwatu

Surf meets luxury, ocean views and some of Bali’s most jaw-dropping stays.

Uluwatu is Bali’s dramatic postcard — clifftops, wild coastline and a raw, elevated energy that feels completely different to anywhere else on the island. It’s not a beach resort area in the traditional sense. The hotels here sit high above the Indian Ocean on limestone cliffs, and the views are nothing short of extraordinary.

This is the part of Bali that surfers discovered decades ago, and luxury followed. The result is a genuinely unique mix — world-class surf breaks at Padang Padang and Bingin below, and some of Bali’s most spectacular high-end resorts above. Family Nest, Jumeirah Bali, TheUngasan, Six Senses — these are properties that earn their price tag with views andexperiences that are genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the world.

It’s not the easiest destination with very young children — the clifftop terrain means it’s lesspram-friendly, and the beaches in the area require a trek down. Although the hotels have private lifts, so don’t worry! Teens who surf, grandparents who want to plonk with a book, kids who want to get sandy on their private beach and not have too far to waddle back to their rooms.

If you want the most visually dramatic corner of Bali, a sunset at Tanah Lot Temple and a hotel that genuinely stops you in your tracks — Uluwatu’s luxury family resorts deliver every time.
